My horse was given the diagnosis of navicular, and I was told my only option to "save" him was a neurectomy, which is cutting
the main nerve to his hooves, so he could no longer feel the pain in his hooves. I cried. And of course, did NOT have this done.
I got online, found that Pete Ramey was having a clinic 2 hours away, begged, got in with my horse, hauled him there, and thus
began the journey of trimming my own horse. The first time I ever trimmed, I drew blood, and I cried. Then I realized it was my
own blood, sliced right across my own thumb with my new rasp. I learned to trim by reading, looking at web pictures, and reading
Pete's book, Bowker articles, and Jaime Jackson books. I bought hoof boots. I sought help from local barefoot trimmers. My "navicular"
horse was sound enough to ride within about 3 months. (He'd been shod all his life). That was 7 years ago. He is sound today.
Now I want to learn to use a grinder, I have 6 horses!
