I'm willing to bet the hind feet are in better shape than the fronts with your horse.
We just got 4" of snow Sunday night and the ones who are holding snow in their feet (and it balling up), are the ones whose hooves could use a good trim. Those that are expelling the snow from their feet have either been trimmed recently or their feet are still functioning well enough, as is. Meaning, they flex enough to pop the packed snow out of them shortly after it begins to form. It's like seeing the mud patties after a rain. Functional hoof form pops mud packs out too (self-cleaning), because they flex well enough to do it.
You're having troubles with thrush and that can also indicate dysfunctional hoof form. Lower functioning feet aren't as self-cleaning as a rule either.
