Over ventileren of stoom afblazen gesproken.
Ken het mens niet, weet niet waarom ze zo'n last heeft van resistente paarden, doet ook niet ter zake omdat de situatie nu zo is als hij is.... géén gras! Ze schrijft eventjes van haar af.....
I have five horses, at least two of whom are obviously insulin resistant, one the other three of whom are definitely at risk. They are kept on a large drylot adjacent Highway 116 in Sebastopol California. I am having problems with people turning me into animal control. All items are related to my management of these horses as barefoot horses with little or no pasture.
The first time, I was turned in for offering no shade, no food, and no water. Took the nice (teenaged…or at least barely above that) young man with the uniform and the GUN down to the pasture and showed off the eight foot diameter – two foot deep water tank full of water, the five shades, and the five automatic feeders that are set to feed twice a day, with an additional hand feeding once a day.
The second time, I was turned in for not offering food, and for “no foot care.” I presume the “no foot care” meant “no shoes.” I showed off the feeders again.
Day before yesterday, I got a note in my newspaper box saying, “Boy, we watch your poor horses and they need to graze (there is a small field full of grass right next to their pen). Horses need to graze all the time, and one of your horses was down on his knees trying to get the grass under the fence (true, they are absolute Houdini’s about trying to get at the grass). Your horses are eating dirt. We know you feed them, but they need to GRAZE.”
I paraphrased, but that was about it.
Yesterday, I noticed a car sitting across the street and the person in it snapping pictures in the direction of the horses.
I wonder when the NEXT call to animal control is coming.
There is also the danger of a repeat of an episode that occurred last year. A woman who was “off her meds” opened all our gates (taking off the heavy chains that keep them closed and wearing them around her neck) and let out 7 of our eight horses in the middle of the night…right on a busy highway. None were killed or hit by cars, but it was pretty scary. And she made off with a fortune’s worth of chains. The police refused to prosecute.
Anyway…needed to vent.
If anyone can come up with a pithy few phrases I can put on a professionally made sign on the fence, I am all ears. I thought of “Google Grass Laminitis if you think these horses are underfed.”
